Recommended Learning

Below are some books that you may find useful. We have linked to online stores where you can purchase these books, and we have written a little blurb telling you about each book. Please note that these are opinions only, so click on the links and read other reviews of the book to make sure it's right for you. If the book is listed by more than one supplier, we've linked to the least expensive one. If the prices are the same, we've linked to the independent seller, hoping to promote independent bookselling and business.

We're just starting this section, so we'll be adding to it frequently. Starting in October, we'll be doing one book review per month. Sign-up for our newsletter to read the new review each month.

If you have any books you'd like to recommend, or if you have any comments on the books we've listed below, please send an e-mail to learning@horsehusbands.com, we'd love to hear your comments and suggestions.

Breeding Management and Foal Development

coverThis is THE reference manual that should be a standard in every breeder's office. It goes into great detail through each step of the breeding process explaining with both words and pictures. It is very detailed, so it's not something to pick up and read on a Sunday afternoon. It may seem overwhelming to the small breeder, but the detail is understandable and extremely helpful, so don't be afraid of it's size and stature. This book is used in Universities across the nation as the premier text on breeding management (I've had my copy since college and I'm still referring back to it regularly).

If you only want to purchase one book on breeding management, get this one, it'll last you a lifetime.

We've linked to Amazon.com, where you will find both used and new copies of this book.

Equine Breeding Management and Artificial Insemination

coverSamper's Equine Breeding Management and Artificial Insemination is an excellent reference manual that, I believe, gives more information on AI but less info on foaling and foal development than Breeding Management and Foal Development. I have them both and refer frequently to compare and contrast each books suggestions.

We've linked to Amazon.com, where you will find both used and new copies of this book. Have a look through it, Amazon lists the first 26 pages for you to review before you purchase.
